Well, not really cold, but cold enough for frost, and so it is time for hats. The wonderfully talented folk at Ottobre design have some free patterns on their website. One is for a kids’ balaclava. Joann’s was having a sale on fleece, so we put two and two together and got ourselves some hats! I didn’t put the dragon “ruffle” on either, but we added ears to the little one. I just made two rounded grey rectangles and two slightly smaller pink ones and sewed them together. Then I sewed one edge along the hat seam for about 2 cm. Then I folded it and sewed the fold. Then I curved it all the way around and sewed the other end 2 cm. Clear as mud, right? Here’s a pic to clear it up.

Unless you want it really tight, I would use a size or two bigger than your child’s head measurement, if you decide to try it yourself. My son’s head was too big for the pattern (53 cm/ 21 in.) , but I just added a pattern line for him (that sentence will make sense if you look at the patterns) as he would have just been the next size up if they had included it. Also, it doesn’t show in these pics, but the cowl fits really nicely and keeps little necks cozy and warm!
